5 Steps to Find Your Niche & Grow Your Ideal Audience

Am I attracting the right audience for my brand?
Who is interested in what I have to say?
What is my niche market?
Who do I serve?

These are questions all content creators ask themselves.

I have been there, I have asked myself those exact questions…

We know how important it is to have the right audience/followers because, in the end, our success depends on them.

What if I told you there is a foolproof way to define the right audience a.k.a. niche for you?

Are you ready to discover your niche and create a community that is in love with your brand?

These 5 steps will help you get clarity and find your niche, which will allow you to grow an ideal audience that is aligned to your brand and your purpose.

What is a niche market?

A niche market is a segment of a broader market.

The niche market has a set of similar characteristics, interests, problems, needs, and wants.

For example, the broader market is fitness, and the niche market is fitness for young vegan women.

A KEY marketing factor when defining a niche is the specific problem these individuals share.

Taking the fitness for young vegan women niche example, some problems they might have are:

  • How to eat vegan and gain muscle mass?
  • Ideas of vegan protein shakes.
  • Finding vegan workout clothing brands

Why is defining your niche so important?

Selling and buying has never been more accessible!

The online world has increased the number of offerings in every industry.

The fact that anyone can open a business, become an entrepreneur, and make money online is a great thing!

But it also means that the competition is very high and customers are being blasted by advertising and marketing strategies.

How do you break through all that competition and reach your ideal customers?

You have to NICHE DOWN and talk to your audience on a personal level!

If you want success in your industry, you have to get SPECIFIC.

Benefits of defining your niche:

  • A specific and targeted niche leads to better communication and a higher success rate.
  •  People want specific advice tailored to their situation or problem.

The 5 Steps to Define Your Ideal Niche

Step 1. Brainstorm

The very first thing you have to do is a Brainstorm!

In this brainstorm, you will dive deep into knowing yourself and your business. To do so, you will be answering the set of questions listed down below.

Answer the questions truthfully and write down absolutely everything and more that comes to your mind.

Grab a piece of paper or open your notes app and let’s get started!

Question 1. What are you passionate about?
Question 2. What are your interests and hobbies?
Question 3. What topics are you educated on?
Question 4. What are you specialized in?
Question 5. What are your values?

The purpose of answering these questions is to get specific on who you are and what you can offer to your audience.

Step 2. WHAT is the problem you solve?

We all have problems, right?

The list of problems and things you can help solve for others are ENDLESS.

The list goes from simpler things like “What healthy meals can I eat for breakfast?”  to more complex things like “How to have multiple income streams?”.

Looking back at the questions you answered, and seeing all the topics you are interested in, what problem are you passionate about solving?

When you are defining your niche there needs to be an intersection between three things. These are: what you are passionate about, what you are good at, and what will you get paid for.

Step 3. Your WHY?

Picture this: You are scrolling through Instagram and you see an influencer account. You click on her  profile and see that she promotes anything and everything plus she doesn’t  really stand for anything.

We have all seen the type and when we do, we suddenly  get this negative vibe that they are in it just for the money.

Brands that don’t have a purpose can’t get true brand loyalty.

Figuring out your WHY is just as important as figuring out the problem that you are solving.

When you establish the reason why you do what you do, people will feel more connected to your brand.

Step 4. WHO are you helping?

Okay, my friend, we have reached the part you have been waiting for, defining your niche!

Earlier you discovered the problem you are going to solve and why you are passionate about solving that problem.

So, Who are you helping?

Think about people that have that specific problem you are going to solve for them.

These are the people who will truly be interested in what you have to say and these people are your NICHE.

The Follower Persona

A great way to define and picture your niche is to create a follower persona. A follower persona is a fictional person that you design. The follower persona is the perfect and ideal follower on social media for you.

In reality, your followers will not be exactly the same as your follower persona, but they will have similar characteristics.

The purpose of designing a follower persona is for you to have clarity on your niche and remember you are truly speaking to.

The Follower Persona Design Guide

Demographics:

What is their gender?

How old are they?

What is their occupation?

What is their monthly or annual income?

Education?

Family size?

Geographic:

Where are they located? (Continent, Country, State, etc.)

Psychographics:

What are their interests?

The challenges are they facing?

The mindset blocks are they having?

What are their desires and goals?

What do they value?

Socialgraphics:

What brands do they follow?

What influencers do they follow?

Which is their fav social media platform?

What type of content do they like to consume?

What content do they like to share?

How much time do they spend online?

Once you have an idea on your niche and have designed your follower persona you will be able to create content tailored for them and increase brand loyalty.

Step 5. Research your niche!

The next thing I want you to focus on is researching your niche.

So far, you know the PROBLEM you are going to solve, WHY you are passionate about that problem, and WHO you are going to help.

It is important to research your WHO (niche) because this will allow you to know them even better and actually make sure they need you.

4 points to look out for:

  1. Needs your solution: Do they actually need your help?
  2. What are their desires and goals?
  3. Questions they have: What specifically are they struggling with?
  4. How much are they willing to invest?

Where to research your niche?

  • Facebook Groups
  • Instagram Accounts
  • Social Media Comments
  • Pinterest Search Results
  • Google Trends

Researching your niche will allow you to think first about your audience and second about your products and services. If you think first about your audience you will get to know them and understand what they really need, then your products will be tailored perfectly for them.

All in all,

There you have it! The 5 steps that will help you get clarity to define your niche, which will allow you to grow an ideal audience that is aligned to your brand and your purpose. You now have the knowledge to define your niche and grow your brand!
